Appearance: In terms of good looks, Odd is fairly attractive. He probably could be more so if he cared about tending to his looks, which he doesn’t. With hazel eyes accompanied by dark brown, unkempt hair, Odd is fairly as ordinary as you can get in appearance. He wears casual clothes, mostly T-shirts and jeans with jackets or sweaters if it’s cold enough. He doesn’t wear any jewelry or anything to compliment his exterior, either. He’s just about as normal and average as you can get on the outside. What’s inside, on the other hand, is an entirely different story.
Personality: To match the typo on his birth certificate, Odd does live up to his name. He’s very calm and collective even in the midst of pandemonium, although with a penchant for thinking too much. In spite of that, he does what he can to protect the ones he loves dearly. Odd would be willing to crawl through death’s teeth in order to save a friend (which he has on a few occasions, and nearly died himself). Due to his troubled childhood, there’s a great need to help people in Odd Thomas, and though he hates violence and the use of guns, he won’t hesitate to pick up one to protect someone—or himself.
He cracks jokes even when it’s not very appropriate, and his humor can come off as fairly dry since he doesn’t laugh much himself—though it’s not like he’s overly serious. Thoughtful, lighthearted, and humble, Odd plans to be a writer one day, but doesn’t make a big deal out of it, despite the fact that he’s already written a few unpublished manuscripts.
He’s also extremely polite, addressing his elders respectfully as “sir” and “ma’am” by force of habit even if they’re close friends. Very concerned for the welfare of others who are unable to help themselves, children in particular, Odd does what he can for the sake of other people.
Seeing how complicated his life had become, Odd chooses to go about a simple lifestyle, as overall he is a fairly simple man. For instance, he would take being a mere car salesman over the FBI any day. For him, trouble comes to him enough already than to simply invite it in from the front door. For this reason, he keeps the secret of his abilities to himself, only allowing a very few number of close friends know.
Since the death of his soul mate, Stormy, he doesn’t spend much time grieving, even though at times he really should and he knows it. Another thing to note about Odd’s philosophy is that, because of his soul mate, he views this life as “boot camp”, in that everyone is living to prepare for service in the next life. In this case, Odd is willing to train his hardest when he’s ready to be with Stormy again forever.
Abilities: On the surface, Odd Thomas appears to be ordinary enough, asides from a few quirks in his personality. However, his ability to see the lingering dead has what set him apart from everyone else all his life. Some of them seek retribution, others just need comfort to move on. Since the beginning Odd decided to use his gift to help these lost souls.Occasionally he will be visited by precognitive dreams, though he can never be sure which ones to set apart from dreams and prophecy.
Having outlived several life or death situations, Odd is also a survivalist. From planks to a hundred gallons of molten tar, he’s willing to use anything he can and that’s available as a mean of self-defense. Because of this, it was mandatory that he be athletic and quick, hasty to get out of a pinch.
Although not yet published, Odd has finished a few novels—mostly anecdotes of his previous adventures. He keeps them private, though in fact he’s prepared to write an entire tome after all of this. If he can make it out alive, that is.
Weaknesses: Since his appearance in Manhattan, Odd lost his Psychic Magnetism (to be “drawn” to something simply by thinking of it), and for the most part is sharp sense of intuition is barely evident. On top of that, he still retained a little bit of his reverse psychic magnetism, in which others can be drawn to him if he thinks about them. This can be pretty damn bad if he’s trying to run from someone trying to kill him.
His refusal to use guns can also make him come off vulnerable as well, especially in situations which would really call for one. Somewhere underneath the flesh of wit and dry humor, Odd really does struggle with his past at times. He also has a bad habit of assumption; he makes swift suppositions without gaining all of the facts. This, in truth, had been what cost him Stormy, and while nowadays he’s more careful, Odd still has a hard time putting his heart before his head.
Although Odd can see the dead, that doesn’t grant him any new information, seeing as the dead don’t talk. While he is usually able to see them like any ordinary people, ever since he woke up he’s been having a more difficult time seeing them; they don’t seem quite like everyone else anymore, and they aren’t as warm when they touch him as they used to be. Some will appear solid and normal, and others will be transparent black shapes.
History:
At the risk of sounding cheesy, the young man has a led rather odd history (his parents claimed his name was originally going to be “Todd”, but neither of them ever called him such, neither has anyone ever thought to fix it), if not a tragic one. As a child, Odd had an absent father and a very negligent mother. His hatred for guns stemmed from her, after she developed a morbid fascination with them. As she began her descent into mania, so did her tolerance for the people around her, including her son. All she wanted was to be “free”, and she viewed her child as a noose that kept her from breathing. Each time he craved for her attention, she would threaten to kill herself before her own boy. The vision of his mother and her words burned forever in Odd’s mind: “Do you want to pull the trigger? You might as well.” She claimed Odd was slowly killing her; eventually he couldn’t take it anymore and left during his last years of high school.
During this time, Odd hadn’t spent much time in classrooms. While a fairly bright boy, there wasn’t much time he could spend in the classroom when the dead sought justice through him. He holds many untold “war stories” of the dilemmas his abilities had gotten him into.
Odd grew up in a small town in southern California called Pico Mundo—“little world”—where he spent most of his life. Over the course of his developing years, Odd found himself in quite a deal of trouble with people on the street, thanks to his gift—or curse—to see the dead which sought either retribution and/or peace. He also found himself in the company of the ghost of Elvis Presley, who he often hung out with for quite a few years.
To make up for all of that (as well as his neglectful mother), Odd found friends with a local cop (who he helped out on several occasions), a famous writer he considers a mentor, and a girl he met from school named Bronwen Llewellyn (though she preferred to be called “Stormy” for her originally name sounded too much like an elf’s). Him and Stormy were so perfect that he believed they were destined to be together forever. The only proof of this he ever needed came from a gypsy mummy while at a fair, which took but one quarter to say this while the previous couple had pumped in a few dollar’s worth, trying to get a promising fortune. Since then, the two had carried the fortune with them, as if it were a foretelling pledge.
For awhile, things were going well for him, in spite of carrying out his deeds with the lingering dead. He had survived twenty years, having enjoyed the simple life as a short-order cook at the local café, and was going to be married within the next month to his soul mate.
Until one day there was an incident. For the previous day Odd had sensed the impending doom and tried to stop it; a series of strange and bizarre events followed, which included the poltergeist of a dead fat man ending up in his apartment and a black room that seemed to repeat itself. Bodachs were gathering to witness the coming tragedy, about to befall upon the town. When in the end he seemed to be getting close to what force was behind the event, it was too little too late.
Odd had arrived at the right place at the wrong time at the mall where Stormy worked at, where he found several people were already killed and even more injured. Before he could make his way to Stormy, he had a run in with one of the three satanic-worshiping gunmans. For the first time, Odd picked up a gun and killed a man. The second gunman as well—the third had been arrested after the incident, but only after Odd had taken a few shots himself, turned off a bomb that was about to set off the mall, and nearly died from blood loss and injury. Because he had taken down the gunmans and saved a possible two hundred more victims, Odd was considered a hero. But the incident has left such a deep-seated scar that it hurts to talk about it to anyone.
For awhile, Odd went insane, boarding himself up in his apartment with just him and Stormy to avoid the media. It wasn’t until his friends showed up that he realized that Stormy had been one of the nineteen victims that died in the shooting. This realization came crashing down on him with heavy devastation.
After an incident six months later where he nearly lost yet another friend in a tragic incident, Odd sought refuge away from Pico Mundo. With the help of Stormy’s father he spent some time in an abbey as a valued guest. His heroics earning him respect that he didn’t feel he deserved—after all, nineteen people died, including his beloved Stormy.
After the events of what went down in St. Bartholomew’s, Odd started to head back home with his mentor, Ozzie Boone. However, drawn by his psychic magnetism, Odd promptly told Ozzie to stop and got out of the car. “It has everything I need. Maybe trouble, but maybe peace. I can’t tell. But it sure is calling me.” Odd had been following that pull since.
The trip has been a long one, carrying him on a cross-country excursion into the unknown. Eventually upon going to sleep one night, Odd found himself waking in an abandoned house within the desolate ruins of what had once been Manhattan.
Manhattanite or outsider? Outsider. He’s native to a small town midst a desert nowhere in Pico Mundo, California.
